ELAC Meeting Minutes

Meeting began at approximately 10:00 AM

In attendance:

Mrs. Abbate, Principal

Mrs. Causey, Lakewood ELAC Coordinator

Miss Coria, Interpreter/ELAC Secretary

Ms. Cesar, DELAC Representative

Ms. Lopez, ELAC President

Introductions were made.

Ms. Cesar asks what can be done to assist her daughter since she tries to use her cell phone to translate what teachers say  and yet it was taken because of the rule that says students are not supposed to use them in class.  Also asked,  was what can be done to support other students like her daughter who are struggling with English but have such demanding coursework this year.

It was explained  that extra support for English Language Learners via Chromebooks that would travel with students during the day from class to class as well as to and from home are coming and this would have translation programs but no facebook, instagram or messaging capabilities that are part of the problem with phones.

Explanation of this committee and its officers duties was completed.

Elections were held.

Copies of the DELAC (The District’s ELAC) meeting place and times were distributed.

Ms. Cesar will attend these meetings and report back to our ELAC but Ms. Lopez volunteered to help out should Ms. Cesar not be available.

The Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) was discussed and parent recommendations were received to be forwarded to the LHS School Site Council at their next meeting.

  • Parents asked that their students in particular (and any student  for whom English is a second language) be considered for English support classes (such as reading) as a part of regular counseling especially when there is room in the schedule such as during unscheduled class periods.
  • Also, asked is if there will be after school tutoring available.
  • Parents also asked if there were English classes available for themselves.  Coordinator showed them the DELAC information concerning this and will see what else might be available.

Meeting Adjourned at approximately 11:00 AM

Next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 05, 2017 @ 10:00 AM in Room B95

Spanish Version of Minutes

Lakewood High School
Acta de la reunión de ELAC

La reunión comenzó aproximadamente a las 10:00 AM

En asistencia:
Sra. Abbate, directora
Sra. Causey, Coordinadora ELAC de Lakewood
Miss Coria, intérprete / secretaria del ELAC
Sra. Cesar, representante de DELAC
Sra.

César no estuviera disponible.
