The YMCA is looking for students who are interested in interviewing for a spot with our Long Beach Youth & Govermment Delegation. They will meet at the YMCA on Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and go on three trips.
*Program Description: *
Youth & Government, or Y&G, is a five-month program in which high school delegates role play various positions within the California State Legislature and the State Court systems. Students participate by joining local YMCA delegations. Within these delegations, students create bills to be submitted to the Model Legislature, research and practice court cases, and attend the three annual Model Legislature and Court conferences.
*Where and when are the conferences?*
Each conference brings together diverse students from across the state to experience the governmental process first-hand through a unique "youth-run, youth-led" model. The first two training and election conferences are held in mid-November and mid-January at Camp Roberts National Guard Base, located just north of Paso Robles. These events prepare youth for their roles at the formal Model Legislature & Court conference held over five days in mid-February at the State Capitol in Sacramento.
*What do the delegates do there?*
Once in Sacramento, the bills developed by delegations during the fall are debated in committees, then on the floor of the Assembly and/or Senate and, if passed, sent on to the Youth Governor. In addition, depending on the size of each delegation, other students participate in the additional program areas offered including: The Supreme, Appellate and Trial Courts, Broadcast and Print Media, Lobbyists, Board of Education, The State Constitutional Convention, Political Parties, and The National Issues Commission, along with many more.
*Program Fees:*
They have recieved over $30,000 in program scholarships due to the generous donations of the Tesoro Corporation, the Miller Foundation, and other private donors! Most students pay between $100-600 over the six month period. This covers all costs associated with the program including travel, food, and lodging. The percentage you get off all depends on how well you interview!
*How to apply:*
Email CJ Brewer at cj.brewer@lbymca.org to schedule a panel interview. Interviews will be scheduled throughout the day of September 29th. All who interview will be considered for the program scholarship and admittance into the delegation. The deadline to reserve a panel interview spot is next week.
