Applied Technology Magnet

Do you want to develop special skills needed to pursue a career in computers or manufacturing? Are you interested in working with high-tech equipment? Are you ready to explore a variety of courses that offer unlimited job opportunities and allow you to be creative in the classroom? If so, you and your parents should consider Lakewood's Applied Technology Magnet (ATM) Program as your high school option.

The ATM program is a high tech program designed for students to increase their skills in technology, as well as academics. The ATM program has both a professional (university bound) and technical pathway in order to accommodate various ability levels and needs. Students must have an interest in computer and/or technology electives. Students may only enter the program in their freshman year, with average reading ability, and an interest in computer/technology. Priority is given to students continuing in the program from middle school. Transportation is provided from certain areas.

Students that participate in the ATM Program have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in career awareness and university field trips
  • Apply for ATM scholarships
  • Attend end of the year ATM Awards programs
  • Make career contacts with area business people
  • Work and study in high-tech ATM classrooms

All students in the ATM program take classes in the ATM Small Learning Community in grade nine. The program is designed to offer a variety of choices for students through technical and professional pathways. Students in the technical pathway take classes leading to careers using current technology or continue in a post-secondary training program. Students in the professional pathway take technology-based career classes, but also meet all the requirements for entrance into a four year university program. In grade ten, students decide upon an ATM major and begin a full year of in-depth training in that field. This training can continue in the eleventh and twelfth grade or a second major can be chosen.
