An Oasis of Opportunity...Leadership, Merit, & Service

The Unique Qualities of PALMS Academy

PALMS academy is designed for the student who desires a well-rounded high school education. The curriculum and class projects emphasize collaboration, with students taking on various leadership roles within the classroom.

The mission of PALMS is to enhance and encourage each student’s character and academic strengths in order to best fulfill university and employment plans after high school graduation. Professions that require working with the public also require those qualities in the PALMS name: Leadership for initiating and innovating ideas; Merit to demonstrate high quality academic thought and solid integrity and citizenship; and, Service, the giving of one’s talents to enhance and encourage the achievement of others.

Students in PALMS have an increased chance to explore these three qualities since the four year curriculum matrix is open to the student’s choice of electives. This means that each student has the flexibility of choosing to be a student leader in ASB, Link Crew, and/or add AVID, music, art, drama, or any of the number of advanced elective classes in core academic areas such as math and science.

A PALMS graduate from Lakewood High School will be prepared for the workplace and further education at a 4-year university, vocational school, and/or community college.

Finding Your Own Oasis

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A few things to consider when trying to decide what to do after high school graduation

1. Decide on one or two fields that interest you.  It's not important at this time in your life to decide on one particular job, however, you should start to narrow down choices by fields of interest.  You can start by looking at some very general characteristics about yourself- Do you like being with people?  Do you like talking?  Do friends come to you for advice or sympathetic ear?  Do you like classes that have a predictable routine or do you like the class that is always doing different kinds of activities not all of which are known to you ahead of time?  Do you like being outdoors or inside?  Physically moving about or staying in one location?  There are many more questions you can ask yourself that can help you decide on a field that can offer a wide variety of careers.

2. Prepare yourself.  Once you have a general idea of a field of study, for example, visual arts or health and medicine, you can begin exploring options within that field.  Again, it doesn't have to be too specific; just enough so you have an idea about what courses/electives to focus on.  If you know your general goal is to attend a four year university right after high school, take all the a - g courses and focus on those electives that will give you some background in your chosen area.

3. Put forth your best effort.  This is easier done when you have a goal and you are in courses you choose and you like.  Remember, there will always be classes you do not like on your way to achieving your goal.  But your goal is yours and no one elses.  Don't let a yucky class get in the way of your personal achievement.  Seek help when you don't understand, make time to get the hard work done, and then enjoy the satisfaction of broadening your knowledge in the classes you like.

Beginning in 9th grade, start working on these three steps.  As long as you are always moving forward- succeeding with C's or better in your classes, keeping good attendance, and being involved in various clubs and school activities-  you will find what you want to be from your own Personal Achievements.
