TELEPARENT MESSAGE: 11/16/09 “REPORT CARD NIGHT”

Good evening to all our Lakewood Lancer families,

This is a reminder that Thursday, November 19 from 4-7:00 p.m., our school is hosting a Student Report Card Night for parents to pick up their student’s grade report and meet with teachers.  Parents first need to report to the cafeteria to pick up report cards and information on the evening’s events.

For those needing a break from the kitchen, In and Out Burgers will be serving up dinner.  For fun, there is a raffle for three Thanksgiving turkeys though our activities director, interesting enough, is not sure if they’ll be delivered frozen or live.

Child care will be provided. For those unable to attend, report cards will arrive home 2-3 days later by mail.

We look forward to seeing you soon.   Go Wood!

ATTENTION ALL GARDUATING SENIORS:  As of today’s date, November 2, 2009, there is 68% of the total graduating senior class who has finished their 40 hours of service learning.  For those who have yet to do their hours completely, be careful not to stress out by procrastinating.  Finish your hours so that you can focus on your final year of classes and enjoying high school.

Message: H1N1 Vaccination Clinics

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Next week, the Long Beach Unified School District will host two clinics where students can receive free
H1N1 (swine flu) vaccines:

Wednesday, November 4, 2009
3 to 7 p.m.
Cabrillo High School
2001 Santa Fe Avenue, Long Beach

Thursday, November 5, 2009
3 to 7 p.m.
Jordan High School
6500 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach

These clinics will serve children ages 3 to 18. This initial round of vaccinations is in limited supply but we
anticipate additional shipments in the coming weeks, and we plan to offer more clinics. Parents and
guardians of children who have asthma, diabetes, and other medical conditions that put youngsters at
greater risk of flu complications are encouraged by health officials to consider taking advantage of this first
round of clinics. Parents and guardians must accompany their children and sign consent forms in person.

On Saturday, November 7, the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services will host a separate
community clinic at the Long Beach Convention Center. Children and adults alike may be vaccinated at this
clinic, which will be open to the general public. However, again, the supply of vaccines will be limited.

Please note that the school district is neither requiring nor recommending vaccination for students; it is only
hosting clinics so that interested families can have their children vaccinated in a convenient location. If you
have any questions about the vaccine, please contact your doctor.

For more information about the H1N1 virus, visit www.longbeach.gov/health or call the State of
California H1N1 Flu Hotline (English and Spanish) at 1-888-865-0564. The hotline is available from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m., seven days a week.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools.

Regards,

Christopher J. Steinhauser
Superintendent of Schools

Message: October 13 (10th grade families only)

To all families of 10th grade students:

Tomorrow, all 10th grade students will be taking the PSAT (Preparatory Scholastic Aptitude Test) that will prepare them for the real SAT test they can take in the 11th and 12th grade years.  The SAT test is used by four year colleges and universities as a basis for admission requirements.  The scores show how “college ready” students are in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and math.

Make sure your student gets to bed early tonight (No later than 9:00 p.m.) and eats a good breakfast in the morning.  Students need to report to their testing area before 8:15 a.m., bring two #2 pencils and a calculator.  It will be raining tomorrow so arrive to school early.  It is important to take this test seriously so each student knows what they need to work on to improve their results in their 11th and 12th grade years.

MESSAGE: OCTOBER 11, 2009

Lakewood Beat Poly:  Need we say more?  Congratulations Lakewood Football on an outstanding game!!

Service Learning Opportunity:  Earn 5 hours just for going to the Service Learning Fair on Wednesday, October 14th from 4-7:00 p.m. at Long Beach City College.  Students can earn 3 hours just for attending the fair, and an additional hour for every adult they bring with them up to 2 more hours.  Meet with representatives from many volunteer organizations around Long Beach and Lakewood to find out where students can volunteer in the future.  Students can also get a bus pass from Ms.Gildon in the Career Center in order to get to LBCC.  Additional information is available on the Service Learning page on School Loop.

Early out passes: If a student needs to exit school early, students need to report to the Attendance Office before school or at Nutrition time and present a parent request note for an “early out” pass.  These are the only times “early outs” are issued to prevent disturbing classroom instruction throughout the day.  Thank you.

Sorry: To all those students who hoped that Columbus Day on Monday, October 12th was a holiday, Mr. Columbus did discover many new lands and he wants you in school, not home, to learn all about it.

MESSAGE: 12th GRADE STUDENTS

Senior Parent Night is this Thursday, October 8th in the Lakewood High School Auditorium at 6:30 pm.  Come meet the Lakewood counselors and learn about graduation, college applications, scholarships available, service learning deadlines, upcoming college fairs, and much more.  Don't miss out on this opportunity to have all of your questions answered by the Lakewood counselors.

TELEPARENT MESSAGE 10/5/09

Delayed Start Wednesday:  This Wednesday marks the first delayed start morning whereby our teachers are in meetings until 8:10 a.m. and classes begin at 8:15 a.m.  Students should still arrive to school at their normal time to avoid being late and miss their first class.  A list of the day for delayed start Wednesdays is in the main office and on School Loop (see below).

October 7, 14, 21, 28
November 4, 18
December 2, 9, 16

Service Learning Hours:  55% of our 12th grade students have completed their 40 service learning hours for graduation.  Ask your student how many hours they have completed as a minimum of 10 hours each year should be the goal.

Lockers:  Due to some recent thefts, students may bring their own lock if they choose.  It is recommended that the locks with keys be used.  The student may choose to keep a key on their person and one at home in emergency.  Remember to turn in the combination lock to the school at the end of the year.

Thank you for your attention and have a nice evening…Go Wood.

Message: September 20, 2009

Greetings to all our Lakewood High School families from the principals’ office:

We have had great start of school with lots of energy restored to our campus with the return of our students. Student assemblies were held this past week to welcome each student and provide reminders on being successful at school. You may access parent guideline information at www.lbschools.net.

Congratulations to our students and teachers for helping us to exceed our Academic Performance target with a score of 734. Although we need to focus on 3 student subgroups for improvement, we continue our goal to become a California Distinguished School.

Attention 11th and 12th grade students: Earn 10-15 extra credits taking an ROP class that provides job skills and experience in a variety of areas. See counselor, Ms. Medina, for a list of opportunities and enrollment on Monday.

Hot weather is going to cook us to a crisp this coming week. Our lady students still need to wear light clothing that cover the bra straps over the shoulders and avoid wearing short shorts. Young men need tops other than tank tops that will keep them cool.
Listening to headphones in the morning before school and after school is fine, just not in classrooms.

Lakewood is off to a great start and we thank our students and families for your support throughout this year.

April 19, 2009: Open House/New Parking/Dress Code

Good evening from Lakewood High School’s principals, we trust your family shared a wonderful Spring Break as we welcome our students back into the last stretch of this school year.

  • Our “Open House” is this Wednesday starting at 5:00 p.m. with our International Faire with various foods and entertainment followed by classroom visitations beginning at 6:30 p.m.   Also, Long Beach Community College will provide two presentations at 6:45 and 7:15 titled “How to Get Into the University of Your Choice.”
  • Due to Open House week, we have two minimum day schedules this Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Our 3 minute loading zone signs are in place and valet service will start Tuesday morning on Briercrest and Centralia. Students will now enter school through our auditorium, front and Dunrobin gates before school begins.
  • Hot days are upon us. Students are reminded to set out their clothes the night before that falls within our school dress code. Those who choose to ignore the dress code can see Mr. Acosta and sign up for the “Students In Favor of School Uniforms” committee.
            Go Wood!

April 7, 2009: Parking Changes, Spring Break, SHARP Banquet

Good evening from the Lakewood High School with 3 messages:   The Lakewood City Council voted last night to support our school and the implementation of two 3 minute student loading (and unloading) zones alongside Briercrest Ave. and Centralia. Starting on Tuesday after Spring Break, there will be students in orange vests assisting with the unloading of students along with bright orange cones set up to help guide cars in and out of the loading zones. In the afternoon, parents will be on their own to load and follow the 3 minute period. This change will help with student safety and traffic congestion. Remember, citations will be issued to those who double park to load and unload students. Avoid any surprises.    Spring Break is upon us and students can take advantage of the time catching up on assignments, reading ahead or practicing math problems. Now is a good time to fill out job applications for summer work as the competition for jobs will be more challenging than ever. Another idea…students can do some of their required 40 hours of service learning. Visit the Career and College Center office for ideas and places to do service learning hours. Also, know that Friday is a minimum day and students will exit school early.   Congratulations to all our students who were honored last night at our school academic recognition banquet to acknowledge their achievements. Students who have a 2.00 G.P.A. and above qualify for the Student Honor and Academic Recognition Program (SHARP) may visit the Activities office for an application for next year. Go Wood!

March 26, 2009: Safety Concerns

Greetings, This is a message from Lakewood’s principals regarding student safety.   Yesterday, a student exited a guardian’s car stopped on the opposite side of the street in front of the school. Unfortunately, she was struck by an oncoming car that catapulted her 45 feet before hitting the ground. Fortunately, her serious injuries and surgery were not life threatening and she will heal. However, this could have been avoided. First of all, know that it is a municipal code violation to stop your vehicle in the street to let a student out and cross over into school. This is where a citation is warranted. In order to lessen the probability of future accidents, Lakewood will be providing action with assistance from the Lakewood Sheriff and the City of Lakewood. In the near future, there will be two stretches of 3 minute curbside parking for drop off and pick up of students, one on Briercrest and one on Centralia.   You and your student will be informed when the signs and staffing are in place.  Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Go Wood!

Gracias.
